Summer Pashmina Shades!
Pashmina is a fine type of cashmere wool. The textiles made from it were first woven in Kashmir. The name comes from Persian پشمینه / pašmina, meaning "made from wool" and literally translates to "Soft Gold" in Kashmiri
The founder of the Pashmina industry is traditionally held to be the 15th century ruler of Kashmir, Zayn-ul-Abidin, who introduced weavers from Central Asia, however it is beleived that it was a certain Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani who got the ball rolling!
What is known, is that in the 14th - century Mir Ali Hamadani came to Kashmir along with 700 craftsmen from parts of Persia. When he arrived to Ladakh, (kashmir) home land of pashmina goats, he found that the Ladakhi goats produced soft wool.
Being rather chilly, the wise man took some of this super fine "goat wool" and made socks and gave them as a gift to king of Kashmir, Sultan Kutabdin. This King rather liked having warm feet and later when Hamadani suggested they start a shawl weaving industry in Kashmir using this wool, well let's just say, thank goodness the King said yes, because now several centuries later we are still enjoying their creations!
